President Yoweri Museveni has strongly condemned irregularities reported during the National Resistance Movement party primaries held on July 17, 2025, warning of tough action against perpetrators.
In a detailed post-election message to NRM members, Mr. Museveni expressed concern over what he described as “unpatriotic actors” who allegedly tampered with the party’s democratic process through result manipulation, register tampering, voter bribery, and violence.
Among the most troubling issues Museveni identified were the altering of election results despite the transparency of lining behind candidates, tampering with registers—some of which appeared bloated despite an earlier clean-up on May 6, 2025—the use of violence in some areas, which resulted in injuries and even loss of life, and the use of money and materials to bribe voters. Mr. Museveni, the national chairman of the NRM party ordered the prosecution of individuals involved in these electoral malpractices, beginning with those who tampered with results in full view of the public.
Meanwhile, a section of National Resistance Movement supporters in Namutumba District took to the streets in protest over the delayed declaration of winners from the recently concluded party primaries.
The disgruntled voters accuse powerful figures within government of interfering in the process to influence the outcomes, leading to delays and uncertainty. Namutumba held its NRM primaries on Thursday, but the exercise was marred by irregularities; resulting into an escalating situation after the district NRM registrar, Mr. Richard Mwanjja, cancelled the results from Kibaale Sub-county following the arrest of Bukono constituency aspirant, Mr. Emmanuel Maganda, who was allegedly caught altering declaration of results forms in his favor.
